Idea Flight

A new way to give interactive presentations.

Idea Flight was an app I created as part of a skunkworks team created at Condé Nast to innovate on new digital products. The idea was born out of presenting design work on large conference room screens instead of the medium where the end user would experience the product. This allowed everyone who was part of the presentation to see an app or website design at scale, without any size or color distortion.

The “Pilot” of the presentation was able to connect to other iPads in a room via Bluetooth as “Passengers” to lead them through the presentation, keeping everyone on the same page. The pilot was also able to add co-pilots to take over and drive or add notes. The app had both Dropbox and LinkedIn integrations. Presentations were kept private by email invitation and the pilots had control to share the presentation with the passengers to download on their own device.

The app won the Apple App Store Best of the iPad Productivity category in App Store Rewind 2011.

While the app showed promise for broader applications outside of corporate meetings, the key learning was how much the dynamic of a meeting changed. Instead of everyone focusing on one thing, they were now focused on their own devices, which proved to be not ideal.
